So Coutinho can play against, score and Knock out his parent club in the champions league but clubs can't buy from one another?

The rules seem a right mess

This might be overly simplistic, but can they not just terminate/pay off his Nice contract and then he signs for us on a free?

Possibly would contradict some sort of insider trading rules. I imagine even FIFA or UEFA would have at least seen the possibility of the multi-clubs trying to pull that trick.

Then again...
