Default What is behind the reluctance of the broadcast media to openly criticise Gareth Southgate

He is given an inordinate amount of credit for changing the culture of the England football team, whatever that means. Yet any critique is caveated with apologies about the man's integrity and what he's like as a person.

The national side are a personification of this cowardice, lack of ambition and tactical stupidity. Why won't they call it out? The idea that doing so is akin to Caroline Flack levels of grief is maddening.

Tbf I think the tide has turned massively the last couple of weeks. General consensus has been that he needs to go. Even the commentators during the Spain game last night were throwing subbies at Southgate/England, when generally speaking all would usually be forgiven until the next shit England performance.

He's won more knockout games than all other England managers combined since 1966 or something.

Final of the Euros last time out.

In a purely numbers game, he's done better than any other England manager other than SAR. Which is to say he's still not won anything.

However it's obvious to anyone who actually understands football & can get some context around the resources available to him that he's underperformed & is a powerfully average coach / manager with very little courage to play on the front foot or change a game tactically when required.

It's obvious his only other job in the game was to get Boro relegated, he's so limited it's actually infuriating. But that should have been clear last tournament & yet the FA are equally as risk averse. So you get the manager you deserve.

Exactly.... England aren't some minnow outfit who are thrilled to get to the knockouts. Surely in international football achievement means a trophy, and particularly when it's the national team home to supposedly the greatest team in the world.

I couldn't understand when he was getting praise for getting to the final last time, they literally lose to the first decent side they play in every tournament (Germany were absolutely shite in euro 2020).

Maybe the FA literally can't attract a decent manager for the job, international football doesn't seem to have the pull it once had.

from what I can pick up the average fan in the stands who's paid good money to be out there couldnt be seething more at southgates decisions, so there's a massive disconnect vs tv/the media

robson was getting absolutely panned in '90...

graham taylor treated like shit, decent guy...

The fans out in Germany absolutely hate him, he was bottled with pint pots after the last group game....

A lot of halftime boo's yesterday and shouts of Southgate out.....

Not a single person I've spoken to back here rates him or wants him to continue after this tournament, which if we're being serious has been an absolute disaster so far......

Unsure why he's still backed in the media but the Coms team did a full 180 pre #@&%!inghams over heady.....

He has got an easy ride considering some absolutely bat shit decisions, interviews and comments like the kalbin Phillips one....

I guess reaching that euro final gives you some kudos...
