He’s been shit for 5 years.

Maguire “this isn’t my job” every time he is on the ball. Defending nearly as bad.

I don’t care that he’s a dick and wears a cap, but Henderson made the defence look100 % better when he played. Problem is: he doesn’t have a a contract worthy of the greatest keeper in history. Ddg does. Woodward.

Ffs, get this ownership shite sorted you greedy £#%&!ing @#%&!s and £#%&! off back to your rounders and netball.

Can we please get away from this narrative that Henderson is better. He's not, he's shit and they both need £#%&!ing off in the summer.

He is shit, but that’s kind of the point. Even though he’s shit, he still did enough of the basics better than De Gea that we looked better for it.

He’s not the answer.

He’s shit. But still better than de Gea overall. This underlines the problem with de Gea and proves it isn’t a tough ask to replace him.

If we're giving De Gea a new contract it's because ten Hag wants to. I don't get it, but hey ho.

Ah great. We’re back to ‘this is an Arnold deal but this is a ten Hag deal’ flexed to support the argument we’re making.

So de Gea getting a new contract has absolutely nothing to do with ten Hag.

Good to know how it will be played out from here on in.

We should be getting the Brentford keeper. Pegged at around £40m.

Someone blamed Fergie for it earlier

Us being shit for 10 years played perfectly into the hands of the one aspect he's half decent at. Good teams don't generally need keepers to constantly bail them out.

As long as he's our goalkeeper nights like last will continue to happen.

Weird take tbh. If he’s told ‘de Gea or no keeper’ is he acquiescing to the contract or out of options?

What is very weird is to assume that the manger has had no input in de Gea getting a new contract as that assumption best suits people’s arguments on the internet.

Erik can’t be credited with dealing with the Ronaldo situation for example but then be overruled by the owners as far as de Gea is concerned. It’s unverifiable speculation designed to suit speculative arguments.

If de Gea is awarded a new contract then the most sensible assumption has to be that it comes entirely with ten hag’s blessing.

Let’s see what happens….

Ten Hag basically says he has qualities and cites some stats. Not too dissimilar to this:

Or, the owners kept Ronaldo and were trying to trigger the extra year on his deal, Erik massaged him out by not playing him and causing it to come to a head.

He’s got little option but to play DdG as he wasn’t allowed to buy a keeper in the summer and the 2 loans he was given were sub-standard.

As mentioned in the article, the club still leans towards asset protection with contracts under the current ownership, they still had offers for Pogba and Lingard on the table when they left ffs. It’s a huge step forward that they didn’t just take up the extra year on de Gea though.

Don’t see it like that. They want to reduce his wages so didn’t want to trigger the 1 year extension plus it sounds like they want him on a longer but cheaper wages wise deal.

I’d say he’s almost more likely to be in the exit lounge if they had triggered the 1 year rather than offer him a new contract which presumably will be 2-3 years minimum?

We’ll see - Erik’s had a year to see all the glaring errors and shortcomings so obvious to so many - what happens next will be a fairly good indication of how Erik actually sees it. There’s a clear opportunity right now for the club to move on from de Gea if Erik wants.
